In June 1954, the third conference dedicated to the development of advanced armoured weapons was held at the Detroit Arsenal. At the meeting, 9 projects of potential replacements for the M48 were proposed. All projects were divided into two groups: TS - work on which could be completed within two years and TL - the development of which required up to five years. One of these projects was the TL-7. It was supposed to develop a machine with a combat weight in the region of 30 tons with increased (relative to the M48) mobility and firepower. As a result of the discussion, the TL-1 project was chosen for further work, but interest in a light, powerfully armed vehicle remained. Therefore, the development of TL-7 was continued. The results of these works were presented on April 7, 1955 at the Detroit Arsenal. It was decided to abandon further developments in favour of the T95 program.
